Summary of Career
1. The regular logging of ship information in a logbook or position report often falls to the Deck Cadet.
2. Involved in the preparations made prior to departure. This will vary depending on the kind of ship.
3. Plans and performs work that involves ordering, receiving, inspecting, returning, unloading, shelving, packing, labeling, pricing, delivering, and maintaining a perpetual inventory of forms, office supplies, and various types of equipment.
4. Rotates stock and arranges for disposal of surpluses.
5. Track stocks of ships supplies and place orders when necessary.
6. Stand watch as helmsman and lookout.
7. Stand security-related watches, such as a gangway watch or anchor watch while the ship is not underway
8. Operate deck machinery, such as the windlass or winches while mooring or unmooring, and to operate cargo gear
9. Look for obstructions in path of vessel
10. Navigate ship and maintains visual communication with other ships.
